5-Minute Read

Let’s be real - adventure isn’t just about boarding a plane or crossing an ocean. Sometimes, the most memorable journeys happen right outside your front door. If there’s one thing I’ve learned from years of travel and photography, it’s that you don’t have to go far to find something extraordinary. In fact, some of the most magical moments are waiting for us in the places we see every day.
When I first started traveling, I thought adventure had to mean big, bold trips - chasing waterfalls in Iceland, wandering the streets of Bali, or hiking through rainforests. But after coming home and spending more time exploring my own backyard, I discovered that adventure is more of a mindset than a destination.
It’s about curiosity.
It’s about looking at the world - even the familiar parts - with fresh eyes.
And it’s about being open to the surprises that everyday life can bring.
Here are a few ways I’ve learned to turn the ordinary into something extraordinary:
1. Take a Different Route
Break out of routine by exploring a new park, trail, or neighborhood; even if it’s just a few miles from home. You’d be amazed at what you notice when you change your perspective.
2. Go on a Photo Walk
Bring your camera (or just your phone) and challenge yourself to capture the beauty in everyday scenes; sunlight on a fence, wildflowers poking through the sidewalk, or the colors of the evening sky. Sometimes, the best travel photos come from the places we least expect. And don't rush it - you'd be amazed what a difference just a couple minutes can make!
3. Try Something New
Check out local events, farmers’ markets, or community festivals. Taste a new cuisine at a restaurant you’ve never visited, or join a class to learn a skill that’s always intrigued you. Adventure can be as simple as saying “yes” to something different.
4. Slow Down and Be Present
Magic often happens when we take time to notice the little things. Listen to birds singing on your morning walk, watch the way shadows dance across your living room, or savor your favorite treat at a local café. The world is full of wonder if you give yourself a moment to notice it.
One of my favorite “close to home” adventures happened right here in Idaho. My sister and I decided to take a hiking trip and explore the wilderness around Seven Devils, and we ended up hiking into one of the many lakes in the area. It was remote, quiet, and peaceful; nestled at the base of a grand, steep mountain, rock-slide background, with tiny waves lapping the shore. In the opposite direction, clear views as far as you could see, out over the clearcut meadow. I didn’t need a plane ticket or a passport—just a little curiosity and a willingness to wander.
